What Writers ARE Reading

The novelist, Rachel Basch, recommends:

"Anyone interested in memoir and the possibilities for the angle of perspective in the form should certainly read Leslie Garis's luminous House of Happy Endings. Garis is the granddaughter of the couple who created The Uncle Wiggily stories and The Bobbsey Twins series. For the most part, it is the chronicle of growing up in an extended family with a father (also a writer) who was mentally ill. While the young Garis is the narrator, she is not the subject and barely the filter for the lives she observes. She seems to accomplish here what the poet Stanley Kunitz spoke of when he said: 'I dream of an art so transparent you can look through and see the world.'"

Rachel Basch's novel, The Passion of Reverend Nash, published by W.W. Norton, was named one of the best five novels of 2003 by Christian Science Monitor and received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews where it was labeled as "a compelling, smart, no-holds-barred story committed equally to verisimilitude and compassion."

Degrees of Love, Rachel's first novel, is available in paperback from HarperCollins. It was translated into Dutch and German and was a selection of the Hartford Courant's Book Club. Basch's nonfiction has appeared in Parenting magazine, and she has reviewed books for The Washington Post Book World. A dedicated teacher of creative writing for the past 20 years, Basch is a contributor to Now Write!: Fiction Writing Exercises From Today's Best Writers & Teachers.
