Literary Itinerary
Carole Flynn is a writer and editor who lives in Connecticut. Carole is currently working with a workshop of writers--editing and critiquing their writing--while also focusing on writing a collection of personal essays.
An attention to craft and artistry infuses Carole's writing, whether it be personal essay, creative nonfiction, or literary journalism. Carole is inspired by nonfiction writing that incorporates the masterful use of creative fiction writing techniques and transcends the limitations of genre.
In 2008, Carole created Literary Itinerary, an on-line calendar to highlight noteworthy lectures, readings, book signings, and workshops presented by writers and speakers in venues throughout Connecticut. From her numerous interviews with award winning authors, Carole recently launched Literary Unleashed, a blog which serves those with a proclivity to all things literary.
Carole's insights on Frank McCourt's contributions to the memoir genre were published in The New York Times Room for Debate Op Ed in July of 2009 which featured commentary by Doubleday's Gerald Howard, publisher James Atlas, poet Billy Collins, and authors William Zinnser and Jay Parini.
Carole has participated in writing workshops, readings, and author events at universities and colleges throughout New England. While still working with writing mentors at Wesleyan, Carole attended Yale University's Whitney Humanities Lecture on The Personal Essay, which was presented by National Book Critics Circle Award winner, Anne Fadiman. Anne personally mentored Carole in the essay genre. Carole also participated in Trinity College's Writing Symposium Giving Voice: The Art of Memoir (where Francine du Plessix Gray, author of Them: A Memoir of Parents, was the keynote speaker). She also attended Mount Holyoke College's Write Angles Workshop (where Julia Glass, author of Four Junes, and Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River, spoke at length about the craft of writing). At the National Writers' Workshop, Carole met New York Times columnist Dan Barry, whose memoir, Pull Me Up, profoundly influenced her writing. In May 0f 2009, Carole attended the Vance Distinguished Lecture Series presented by CCSU's 2009 recipient: Anderson Cooper.
Carole attended Harvard's 2009 Nieman Foundation Conference on Narrative Journalism. Carole posed thought-provoking questions to the many authors and panelists who moderated the event, including author and syndicated columnist, Connie Schultz. She also attended panel discussions facilitated by authors Marci Alboher, Jeff Chang, and Dennis Palumbo; Mara Schiavocampo (digital correspondent for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams); Sewell Chan (New York Times staff reporter and bureau chief of the blog "City Chat"), and Amy Davidson, senior editor at The New Yorker.
Prior to that, Carole wrote, edited, and proofread marketing collateral for advertising agencies, marketing groups, and Fortune 500 companies. Carole worked as a freelance editor and proofreader for Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedias and Weekly Reader Magazine. She recently was a contributing proofreader and editor on Chris Knopf's 2008 novel, Head Wounds (Random House Canada).
Carole earned a 4.0 GPA receiving her Master's Degree from Wesleyan University in 2008 and her Bachelor's Degree from The University of Connecticut in 2002. Carole is a member of The Association of Writers & Writing Programs and The World Affairs Council of Connecticut.
Carole was featured in the Hartford Courant's At Work section in 2003 in "Right at Home." The article focused on career professionals who left Connecticut (in her case to pursue a marketing position in Washington, D.C. where her then fiance--now husband--also lived). They've since married and returned to Connecticut.

Carole Flynn offers writing, editing, and proofreading skills on a contractual basis. She also facilitates writing workshops and is a writing tutor.
An advocate for the importance of early and consistent childhood reading, Carole volunteered in her K-5 school district as a tutor in the Reading Readiness program for one year and was the chairperson of the Read at Home Committee for several years. She also coordinated the school's annual book drive. During that time over 4,000 books were donated by students, parents, and staff in her community; the recipients were K-8 students in one of Hartford's schools.

ERIC BURNS, Monday, October 18th, 7:30 pm, Westport Public Library
Eric Burns, a former NBC News correspondent who is an Emmy-winner for his broadcast writing, knows about the impact of television. His new book, Invasion of the Mind Snatchers: Television's Conquest of America in the Fifties, chronicles the influence of television that was watched daily by the baby boomer generation. As kids became spellbound by "Howdy Doody" and "The Ed Sullivan Show," Burns reveals, they often acted out their favorite programs. Likewise, they purchased the merchandise being promoted by performers and became fascinated by the personalities they saw on screen, often emulating their behavior. It was the first generation raised by TV and Burns looks at both the promise of broadcasting as espoused by the inventor, and how that promise was both redefined and lost by the corporations who helped to spread the technology. Books will be available for purchase and signing. A percentage of all purchases will benefit the Library. For more info: http://www.westportlibrary.org/events/
